MACBOOK AIR GAINS M3
APPLE QUIETLY LAUNCHED a new MacBook Air earlier this month (check out our in–depth review on p62). No doubt the lack of fuss was intentional: this is last year’s model with an M3 chipset to replace the M2 version, which in fairness hasn’t been around all that long. But, progress and all that. Though more power is always welcome —as is the ability to now output to two displays for improved productivity at a desk, albeit with the lid closed —and make no mistake, this is certainly a technological leap, owners of the M2 MacBook Air will sensibly skip this upgrade. Thankfully, Apple has kept the price tag of the new MacBook Air unchanged from the 2023 version, making it decent value for the entry–level 13–inch model at just $1,099 (the 15–inch is similarly still $1,299). Apple has understandably canned the MacBook Air M1, and sweetened the deal of the existing M2 MacBook Air, making it good value —and the cheapest way to get into MacBook ownership —at just $999 for the entry ‐level 13–inch model. You aren’t able to get hold of a discounted 15–inch M2 model direct from Apple, it would seem, but retailers such as Best Buy have heavily discounted it to the same price as the 13–inch M2 model, which is a tremendous deal. Do note that this is a limited offer, so might not be available when this issue goes on sale. Best Buy was offering the M2 MacBook Air for $100 less than Apple at $899 recently, but that didn’t hang around for long.
