There are lies. There are damned lies.And there’s flat panel marketing. It’s common for LCD monitors and HDTVs to be sold as “LED” displays when, in fact, the LED bit is just a backlight. Let’s not even start on the nonsense monitor makers get up to when it comes to specifications such as pixel response.
The way screens are sold is only getting more confusing with the emergence of two new LED technologies: mini-LED and microLED. They sound awfully similar, but they have vanishingly little in common. Mini-LED is just another backlight tech, albeit the most advanced yet, whereas microLED is a panel type in its own right.
In really simple terms, microLED is the future for display tech, the ultimate flat panel. Mini- LED is just the latest and greatest version of LCD technology. If that makes mini-LED sound like it’s playing second fiddle, in technological terms it is.
