Two AI chatbots, alike in dignity, but which should you use?

CHATGPT AND BARD are two large language models (LLMs) that are often compared to each other. Both models are capable of generating text, translating languages, writing different kinds of creative content, and answering your questions in an informative way. However, there are some key differences between the two models.

That intro paragraph was written by Google Bard, and while it has a stilted feel to it that’s at odds with the sparkling, flowing prose you’re used to from Maximum PC, it does show that chatbots powered by large language models— which we seem to have decided to call ‘AI’—are capable of producing perfectly acceptable text you might think a human had written. Bard and ChatGPT are textbased systems, which means they can’t create images like other specialized AIs such as Midjourney or Stable Diffusion.

Even the term ‘large language model’ itself can be confusing, so let’s lay out exactly what it is. LLMs are deep learning neural networks that run on massive racks of GPUs in a data center somewhere. They’re trained on huge quantities of text created by humans that is gathered from the wider internet. From this, they learn the relationships between words, and which ones are most likely to come next in a sentence.
