GAMER’S DELIGHT

WE’VE BEEN A BIT down on 2023’s graphics cards, thanks to a pretty toxic combination of inflated prices, lackluster performance, and a lack of a generational improvement over previous GPUs. Thankfully, we’ve finally been able to dish out a positive review due to the arrival of AMD’s RX 7800 XT (see page 76). At $500, it isn’t “cheap”, but it is a card that a lot of you reading this will actually be able to afford. It also punches above its weight in performance, taking the fight to Nvidia’s $600 RTX 4070 and beating the $100 more expensive card in many titles. True, AMD’s a generation behind Nvidia in terms of ray tracing and AIpowered features, but this is the sort of competition we’ve been hoping for since this latest generation of overpriced cards were released. True, Nvidia’s unlikely to drop the price of its RTX cards, but hopefully the Green Giant will be rattled by AMD’s mid-range challenger. After all, we’re the ones that benefit from healthy competition.

Why does GPU pricing have to be so infuriating?
I NOTED A WHILE BACK that prices of pretty much everything had normalized with the pandemic receding and other supply chain abnormalities subsiding. The one exception were GPUs. Several months later, while graphics cards are cheaper, they still haven’t returned to historical trends. But what’s even more frustrating is that pricing just doesn’t make sense.
