MØL
These Danes’ debut re-energised blackgaze – and now their return is backed by one of metal’s biggest labels
WORDS: MATT MILLS
MØL CHANGED THE face of blackgaze when they debuted with Jord in 2018. Thanks to the album’s emphatic breakdowns, ceaseless screeches and punchy song structures, the genre could no longer be decried by elitists as black metal ‘gone soft’. Not even record label Holy Roar imploding in 2020 amid controversy could derail their scene-inspiring status; they only bounced back stronger, signing to Nuclear Blast (home of Machine Head, Sabaton and Nightwish). With a metal behemoth behind them and a modern classic in their back catalogue, are they feeling the pressure for album number two? Not a bit, they tell us.
