POWERWOLF
PRIVATE VENUE, GERMANY
Saarbrücken’s lupe-y power metallers stream a monumental spectacle
Attila Dorn chalks up another victory
TWO YEARS INTO the pandemic and we’ve seen all manner of livestreams, from fuzzy footage shot in basements to over-thetop performances that erupt with fire and theatrics. If you’re familiar with German power metal maniacs Powerwolf, it won’t take long to guess which category they fall under.
If there was a prize for the most ‘extra’ band in metal, Powerwolf would be top dog. The drama is always sky-high with band leader Matthew Greywolf and his gang of corsepainted, self-described ‘wolves’: from their grandiose, fist-pumping power metal to their live shows, dubbed ‘metal masses’, which burst with energy, pyro, and include more than a few wind machines. The fact that they have unashamedly billed this, their first ever livestream, as The Monumental Mass: A Cinematic Metal Event, says it all – it’s time to strap yourself in for a spectacle.
