ARMOUR IN DETAIL: Porsche Jagdtiger
Pictorial reference for modellers
The Editor looks at the eleven ‘Porsche’ Jagdtiger.
Jagdtiger Fgst. No. 305004, ‘the Bovington Jagdtiger’. This Jagdtiger was one of an assortment of AFVs gathered into Panzergruppe Paderborn in March 1945. It was abandoned near Paderborn on 5 April as units of the US XIX Corps advanced. Here Major Russel L. Smith and Technician 5th Grade Charles Wharton examine the Jagdtiger shortly after its capture. (via Thomas Anderson)
The Jagdtiger, despite its minimal impact on the course of World War II, is one of the best-known and documented German AFVs of the period. Just eleven of these beasts were made and ten were delivered to the front (the eleventh, Fahrgestell – chassis – number 305005 was rejected because of its armour quality). We know, thanks to the efforts of Karl-Heinz Münch, James Blackwell and others, much about the fate and appearance of the other ten.
