From June 1944, the Jagdpanzer 38 (JgdPz 38), better known as the Hetzer, was available in larger numbers. This diminutive AFV is very popular with modellers and vehicle enthusiasts. Yet, what was the actual performance and capabilities of this tank destroyer? Assessing the effectiveness of a weapon system is not easy. Should such an experiment be based on sober performance data such as armour, gun calibre or top speed, or are other factors more important and ultimately more meaningful? To make my assessment, I have consulted contemporary documents from the archives. This ensures a largely unadulterated view of historical realities.
