Jonathan Mock looks back on a superb IPMS Scale ModelWorld 2024
The return of a ‘proper’ IPMS Scale ModelWorld in 2023 felt like the world had finally turned a corner in the fight against the Covid 19 pandemic. The 2020 show had been (rightfully) cancelled and the 2021 event went ahead in a much reduced capacity, 2022 seemed like it was cautiously coming back but it was the 2023 show that felt like a real return to form, as detailed in this column this time last year (‘Telford Triumphant’).
The big difference this year was having my good friend Drewe Manton back on the road. Drewe had been absent since the 2019 show and in fact it wasn’t until August 2024 that he popped up for the weekend for the Avon IPMS show which he’d equally missed out.
As ever, the months/weeks/days/hours leading up to departure for the show were a blur of modelling activity here, mostly preparing stuff for the Tamiya and Italeri importers The Hobby Company Ltd’s stand (https://www.hobbyco.net/) where myself, Drewe and former MAI editor Spencer Pollard, would be hosting the modelling demos. This year Drewe was making a start on the new Tamiya 1:48 F-35C, while Spencer and myself were building military subjects.
