Dora explores the outer reaches of the Brazilian soul.
THOUGH THE family name makes it seem like Dora Morelenbaum has been around forever (her parents, Jacques and Paula, played with Tom Jobim many years ago), this is her solo debut, and follows the Latin Grammy-winning Sim Sim Sim by Bala Desejo, the band she co-founded during lockdown. There is a similar, expansive outlook, with nothing off the table or beyond the ken of the musicians: Morelenbaum can smoulder through seductive, Joyce Moreno-like jazz (Não Vou Te Esquecer), tackle late-1960s soul with Gilberto Gil-worthy swagger (Sim, Não), or play with your mind and ignore the rules like a Tropicália veteran (Caco). Unsurprisingly, given her provenance, the arrangements are striking, and the production, by Ana Frango Elétrico, is bold (Venha Comigo, in particular, is the sound of an ensemble believing and proving that they can achieve anything they want to do). Highly impressive.
