ELTON JOHN’s ’70s story reads like a superhero origin tale: bashful, bespectacled lad gets bitten by (musical) bug, transforms into Captain Fantastic and becomes a phenomenon, while suffering personal crises. It’s such a startling narrative that it has, of course, been told time and time again. Not least by Elton John himself, who in 2019 sanctioned Dexter Fletcher’s biopic, Rocketman, and oversaw a characteristically frank autobiography, Me, ghostwritten by The Guardian’s Alexis Petridis.
