I’m writing this in the middle of September in what seems like the last throes of summer. In reflection, and not using any historical data but just my memory, the summer seems to have been pretty good this year. However, unlike any other summer, there have been significant chunks of time where we couldn’t even get to the beach or other bodies of water due to Covid restrictions.
Since lockdown restrictions have eased and swimming pools have struggled to reopen, I’ve noticed a huge surge in open water swimmers. Car parks in Brighton where I live, which in previous years would have been quiet at 6.30am on a weekday morning, are now bustling with a mix of neoprene and tow floats being prepared. With all this recent activity and the start of the season being lost it only seems right that for this year at least, we all extend the duration of our open water swimming and try and swim well into October and even beyond!
