As we celebrate Pride in 2026, it is important to remember the LGBTQ people who first came together to take action and fight for gay rights and equality in the USA. Amidst growing anti-gay sentiment and repression, including the assassination of openly gay San Francisco city supervisor Harvey Milk, men and women, gay and straight, got together and organized the first National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights on October 14, 1979.
