Missing battery
I’m a subscriber to PC Pro and have done lots of voluntary user support, which naturally includes lots of fixing hardware. I’ve been at it for over 30 years, so I’m confident, if not expert. As an inveterate tweaker, I always enjoy Lee Grant’s struggles with repairability.
In August 2024 I thought I’d dip my toe into Windows on ARM and bought a Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Snapdragon laptop. This has performed well until the last week or two when the 16+ hours of battery life diminished, seemingly overnight, to about 2.5 hours. Given that I’ve got ancient portables, going back to a Surface Pro 4 from 2015, which still manage quite close to their original battery life, I wasn’t impressed.
According to Lenovo, the battery is an “easily replaceable” part, and its support site helpfully provides full details of the required battery and a DIY page showing how to do it. “Great!” I thought. Silly me. My first port of call was to click on the link on Lenovo’s site. The standard part and an alternative popped up, but sadly Lenovo had no stock of either. I toyed with buying from a Chinese site, masquerading as .co.uk, but discretion being the better part of valour I skipped it after checking the reviews. Eventually Amazon came to my rescue with a “compatible” (time will tell) part, with a lengthy lead time and expensive price.
