ON POINT!

Meet the new tetra from South America that has the UK characin community paying attention.

An immature fi sh that hasn’t fully coloured up.

MAX PEDLEY

Aquatic retailer Max writes extensively on all things freshwater. He has a particular love for characins.

THE LAST year or so held a lot of aquatic surprises for UK fi shkeepers. One such treat bestowed upon British aquarists was an outstanding import of Hyphessobrycon notidanos, a fi sh that most hadn’t yet seen in the fl esh.

The fi sh itself was only scientifi cally described in 2006 and as a result has yet to be christened with a common or trade name. The specifi c epithet ‘notidanos’ is a Greek translation of, ‘with pointed dorsal fi n’, so one might be tempted to refer to it as the ‘Pointed fi n’ tetra.
