Once in a blue, progressive moon, a band comes along who have so much going for them that it seems inconceivable that they won’t conquer the world. After a couple of well-received underground releases that showcased a wildly imaginative and folky take on the prog metal formula, Wilderun independently released their third album, Veil Of Imagination, in November 2019. It was, and remains, an utterly mind-blowing piece of work, wherein Opeth’s elegant grandeur collided with Cardiacs’ quasi-classical crescendos and some of the most imperious, tech metal showboating yet committed to hard drive. Not surprisingly, Wilderun were swiftly snapped up by a discerning record label, Century Media, and Veil Of Imagination was given a second crack at the whip via a lavish re-release, which also now included an audacious cover of Iron Maiden’s Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son. Unfortunately, despite clearly having the wind in their sails and a deafening buzz in their ears, Wilderun’s quest for world domination was stopped firmly in its tracks.
