“When you realise what you’re in control of, you can feel empowered and motivated”
The last few months of 2016 brought one crisis after another for me. First, in the September, my partner and I went our separate ways. It was heartbreaking. I moved out of the house we were living in together and into a flat of my own in October. But, two months later, the day before Christmas Eve – which was also my 30th birthday – I was told I had to move out. Then, just a couple of weeks later, I was made redundant.
When you have a shock, your body reacts physically, and you can’t deny yourself the expression of that. However, my body needed to respond in the moment; if I wanted to cry, I had to allow myself to. If I wanted to walk out of the room and get some space, I had to let myself do that. The worst thing you can do is suppress your feelings. With the redundancy, I had to step out of the environment and get some fresh air. I took a few deep breaths and told myself, ‘This is not your fault and there’s nothing you can do to change it; focus on the solution, not the problem. This could be a massive opportunity.’
