Judith, married first to Æthelwulf, later married his eldest son, Æthelbald
King Æthelwulf’s wife, the mother of Alfred and his brothers, died around 854, leaving the king without a queen. So he found one: Judith, daughter of Charles the Bald, king of the Franks. No matter that she was barely a teenager and Æthelwulf probably in his 50s: this was a political marriage to cement an alliance and to sprinkle some Carolingian glamour – Charles the Bald was the grandson of Charlemagne – on the House of Wessex.
