This head of a girl was probably intended for a painted ceramic platter, possibly for Minton, and would have been one from a set of the four seasons.
Depicting spring, the 16½in (42cm) wide chalk is by Herbert Wilson Foster (1846-1929), the artist and porcelain painter who worked at one point on the tile panels in the Victoria and Albert Museum. The piece is priced at £1750 from London dealership Sarah Colegrave.
