A still-life attributed to Pieter Claesz – £130,000 at Bonhams.
Golden Age Dutch art topped the bill here via a fresh-to-market still-life attributed to the 17th century painter Pieter Claesz (1597-1660), which sold for over four times the estimate at £130,000.
Working in the mercantile city of Haarlem, Claesz was a pioneer of the so-called monochrome ‘breakfast’ still-life, which consisted of simple fare typical of a Dutch meal with glasses of wine or beer arranged on tabletops.
