The oldest known printed tract on how to catch and cook fish is on offer at Dr Jörn Günther Rare Books of Basel, Switzerland, priced at €25,000. Printed in Strasbourg c.1510, Fischbüchlein’s 27 chapters combine recipes with instructions on how to make baits or catch crayfish. The book first appeared in 1493 (no versions of this edition are known) but was reprinted continuously during the 16th century. This copy was previously owned by German businessman and collector Hans Dedi (1918-2016) and Sir Jocelyn Stevens (1932-2014), whose library was sold at Bonhams in 2006.
