Numerous tribes inhabit the Cross River state of south-eastern Nigeria, close to the border with Cameroon. Animals of many kinds play a major part in the myths and religions of the area.
An unidentified local craftsman created this totem figure in the shape of a fish. The 16in (41cm) long figure, whose exact ritual purpose is unknown, was carved in soft stone and is now mounted on a wooden base. Ruef in Landshut is offering the carving in its summer auction on July 20 with an estimate of €450.
