Aviation Specials  |  Routemaster
The London Routemaster is Britain's best known bus, a byword for the red double-decker. It first appeared in public 60 years ago at a commercial vehicle exhibition in September 1954 and although the last new ones were built 46 years ago, Routemasters remained in daily service on busy London bus routes until December 2005. A small fleet of refurbished Routemasters was retained to provide a heritage service connecting tourist attractions in central London. Although it is a traditional bus with engine at the front, open platform at the back and a conductor collecting fares, the Routemaster also was technically advanced and precision built, which explains why nearly half of them survive today. This 132-page special magazine is packed with photographs and articles telling the story of this remarkable bus — in London, other parts of Britain and overseas — from its conception in the late-1940s to the present day. This highly collectable publication comes from the team that brings you Buses, the world's best-selling monthly bus magazine.
