IN THIS ISSUE

It's seabird season! But where should you go to see your targets, and what weather conditions are best? Top seabirder Niall T Keogh is on hand to help you get the most from your seawatching this autumn with his guide in the August issue of Birdwatch.

Western Capercaillie is one of our most elusive yet impressive birds, yet its population is dwindling in its last Scottish stronghold. Jocasta Mann of the Cairngorms Capercaillie Project looks at this magnificent grouse’s chequered history in Britain, what is causing the latest declines and what the future might hold.

Many birders wait until winter before turning their attention to gulls, but late summer offers a brief window to see two desirable species in pristine juvenile plumage. Josh Jones shares in-depth advice on how to separate young Caspian and Yellow-legged Gulls at this time of year in our latest ID guide.

Meanwhile, the halfway point has passed in our green birding challenge, #LocalBigYear – we present a selection of highlights from our readers so far.

Have you ever considered Herzegovina as a birding destination? Sam Viles was recently treated to a feast of Eastern European specialities and beautiful scenery on a spring trip to the Balkan nation.

Also in this month’s issue, our experts review the new Hawke Vantage 8x42 binocular and offer advice on finding scoter and scarce drift migrants, while Bill Oddie discusses his coldest ever birding experience.

August’s digital edition has lots of bonus content, including:
• Video of displaying Western Capercaillie;
• Film of late summer seabird migration;
• Footage of young Caspian Gulls;
• Sound recordings of the calls of Grey, Pied and Yellow Wagtails;
• Film of rarities and scarcities from Britain, Ireland and the wider Western Palearctic.

Birdwatch Magazine

I look forward to each issue, love reading it. Revisto 18 junho 2020

Brilliant.... But!

This magazine app is excellent apart from a few teething problems the 'pocket mag' group appear to be having. The content & additional videos are worth it alone however, downloading & reopening the magazine on my ipad2 has been a problem... It has froze & failed to download on two separate occasions. An email to pocketmag quickly resolved the issue. A future 5star set up im sure once these minor issues have been resolved fully.... Revisto 18 janeiro 2013
