WHAT MAKES A GREAT WINDOW?

Emily Batesmith shares some expert insight into choosing the best windows for your home

Windows are a hugely important part of your home. Not only do they need to successfully provide daylight and views, but, as part of your external envelope, they should also contribute to a thermally-efficient setup, maintaining energy balance and overheating management. On top of all of that, they also need to look good, as windows play a leading role in your property’s kerb appeal. So, how can you make sure you’re specifying the best products for your project?

Quality

What constitutes a good quality window? “The starting point has to be the design. Can it do exactly what you require in terms of size and opening elements?” says Edward Stobart, head of projects at IDSystems. Fundamentally, the style needs to match the rest of your property and work in the way that you need it to. Remember that different designs open in different ways: side-hinged, sash, top-hung – what is right for where it’s placed?
