Buses Magazine  |  London Bus Vol 1
This 132-page book is a celebration of 80 years of London buses, from the formation of London Transport in July 1933 to the present day under the control of Transport for London. Supported by a wealth of colour and black and white photographs, it tells the story of the buses and how they have been organised and operated, how London Transport replaced many of its trams with trolleybuses between 1935 and 1940, then replaced the remaining trams and all trolleybuses with diesel buses in the post-war years.
It takes in the country buses and Green Line coaches that London Transport operated before 1970. It describes some of the most significant bus types associated with London, especially the RT of the 1940s and early 1950s, the legendary Routemaster, introduced in 1954 and still operating heritage routes today, and the New Bus for London reintroducing conductors and the ability to hop on and hop off an open platform when stopped in traffic.
We also consider impressive engineering works that once rebuilt London's buses every few years, and more recent developments like the successful introduction of low-floor buses and the benefits they have brought. Plus we take readers on six rides across London on some of the most significant routes.
