This month my chosen theme is Wedding Anniversaries. Historically the majority of weddings have taken place in summer, so naturally this is also the time of year most people celebrate their wedding anniversary.

The names of some anniversaries provide guidance for appropriate gifts for the spouses to give each other. Traditionally gifts varied in different countries according to local custom, but most landmark years now have well-established titles common to most nations: 5th Wooden, 10th Tin, 15th Crystal, 20th China, etc. The practice dates back to Medieval Germany (known for its excellent metalworking) where upon reaching the 25 year mark the wife was presented by the village with a silver wreath, and if lucky enough to achieve 50 years together received a wreath of gold. Over time the number of symbols expanded and gifts were assigned that had direct connections with each stage of married life.
Whilst a lovely keepsake is treasured, a cake is always a special addition,
particularly where families gather to mark the occasion and join in the celebration.
