I ’ve lost count recently of how many times someone has asked me if it’s ever going to stop raining. This seemingly never ending run of bad weather we’re currently experiencing has caused a natural disaster of almost third world proportions in some parts of the country and according to the latest forecasts the weather shows no signs of improving. With flood warnings being issued left, right and centre on an almost daily basis as river levels continue to rise, it’s blindingly obvious
that quite a few outdoor classic gatherings due to take place over the next few weeks will have to be either cancelled or postponed to a
rearranged date later in the year. It’s going to take ages for many of the presently water-logged show grounds to dry out enough to allow vehicles to park up on them without getting seriously bogged down. Even if the ground seems firm enough and the show goes ahead, unpaved entrances will get churned up by vehicles gaining access to sites and the whole area will be quickly transformed into a huge quagmire. But just when do event organisers make the decision to cancel a show due to unsuitable conditions? It can never be easy for the head honcho to issue the orders to cancel a show at short notice as the financial
repercussions for the organising committee can be enormous…
It’s not only the organisers that suffer financially if a show gets cancelled. Many traders and auto jumbers depend on attending a regular stream of shows for their livelihood. All it takes is a couple of missed weekends and their all important cash flow suffers to a point where some stall holders may call it day and throw in the towel – literally in some cases. And if a show does go ahead, the number of visitors and exhibitors may be down as it may only be a diehard band of enthusiasts who will want
to display their classic pride and joy in a soggy field.
