I’ve read a lot of plaudits that rightfully have come the way of Emma Twyford after her ascent of The Big Bang and in doing so reaching the lofty heights of F9a to add to climbing E9 on trad. I was fortunate to be down at Lower Pen Trwyn with Emma a few days before her successful ascent with the intention of getting a few images for an upcoming feature on the area. She was keen to get on the route and that evening I was convinced she would nail it on her third attempt – she was so close but her left hand gave out to fatigue when she virtually had it in the bag. You couldn’t get closer without doing it. Of course, she had been here before and her ‘stubbornness’, her description not mine, would see her through. In less than ideal conditions and on her fi rst attempt a few days later she became the third person to climb the route. As an aside, it turns out that James MacHaffi e, who made the second ascent, returned after this for photographs with Ray Wood and surprised Ray by climbing it again.
