Apple’s spammyF1offer drives iPhone users mad
Keumars Afifi-Sabet puts the boot into tech villains, jargon-spouting companies and software trying to trick you
When it comes to motor racing I’d much rather play Mario Kart on my Nintendo Switch than spend a day at Silverstone, so the new film F1 has largely passed me by (at around 150mph).
But I’d have found it impossible to ignore if I were an iPhone user in the US. At the end of June Apple’s Wallet app sent an alert offering a $10 discount on F1 tickets through the movie-booking site Fandango – but only if you paid through Apple Pay (see screenshot 1 ). This couldn’t have annoyed people more if Brad Pitt (the film’s star) had spent hours tailgating them, before overtaking on the inside while flicking V-signs.
