YASMINE HAMDAN
Al Jamilat (Crammed Discs)
The New York Times hailed her as “Arabic music’s modern voice”. But Lebanese artist Hamdan is much more than that: a nomadic singer invested in border-transcending songs. Al Jamilat (The Beautiful Ones), which follows 2013’s feted Ya Nass (and a cameo in Jim Jarmusch’s cult vamp lick, Only Lovers Left Alive) does this with subtle, sensual, magpie deftness, stringing Asian, Western and Middle Eastern sounds together like so many beads on a necklace. Dreamy.
