MY PATIENTS REGULARLY ask me how they might avoid jetlag on long haul flights and keep healthy while travelling. Here’s the strategy I recommend, and use as a regular overseas traveller myself.
Getting good sleep is integral to a happy holiday and/or keeping sharp for business. If you’re in a job where you’re required to travel a lot for work, it’s essential that you stay on you’re A-game to nail those meetings. Unfortunately, travelling and long haul flights can make this difficult. Not only do we push ourselves to the max right before we head overseas, we are also so relieved to finish work that we let our hair down a bit and go for a party! This further depletes our immune systems. During our time spent on aeroplanes, the oxygen levels are lower than what we’re used to outside. This causes that hungover and jet-lagged feeling simply due to low oxygen levels.
