On a big anniversary, it feels appropriate to look back at one of Edge’s most talked-about early reviews – our assessment of Doom: Evil Unleashed. In it, we praised the speed, vertical action and horror chops of this shareware shooter, but marked it down for its lack of variety and the inability to point the camera up and down, eventually awarding it 7. But what of that concluding line, so often repeated (and just as often misquoted) in the years since? “If only you could talk to these creatures,” it lamented, “then perhaps you could try and make friends with them, form alliances… Now, that would be interesting.”
