FlyPast  |   August 2020
With this year marking the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, the August 2020 issue of FlyPast takes you into the heart of the campaign with ten exclusive features. We cover a multitude of different aspects of what is often described as the country’s finest hour, including tales of heroism, fast thinking, and sheer will power. While this year’s events to honour the men and machines on both sides have been sadly marred by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we hope these articles help fill that gap. Features include the role Cranwell graduates played during the battle, how the RAF defended Scapa Flow, the Luftwaffe’s top five aces and the efforts of artist Cuthbert Orde to immortalise some of the fliers taking to the skies.
In Classics, we detail Gloster’s revolutionary Javelin – the RAF’s debut all-weather fighter. Entering service with the RAF in 1956, the type was retired just over 10 years later.
Elsewhere, former RAF pilot Al Munro recalls some of his experiences flying the Phantom on the Cold War frontline in Germany, while Kathleen Hanser reveals just some of Howard Hughes’ incredible aviation achievements – both in the air and on the ground.
In news, we introduce ‘Warhorse’ – the P-51 once affectionately known as ‘The Shark’. We also report on the first flight of a Grumman Bearcat in California and the sole Pfalz D.VII in Sweden, the Royal Aeronautical Society’s efforts to bring history alive and much more.
