Riot in Lagos is a seminal track in electronic music’s history: its wonky, mid-tempo groove influenced early hip-hop and electro producers in the US. Featuring prominently on Sakamoto’s boldly experimental second album, B-2 Unit, the track was loosely inspired by Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti’s kaleidoscopic polyrhythms. Sakamoto made heavy use of the Sequential Circuits Prophet-10, co-producing the track with legendary dub producer Dennis Bovell.
