Gardens Illustrated  |  October 2022
The October issue of Gardens Illustrated highlights the mellow beauty of autumn. We visit a Great Dixter-inspired garden in the Weald of Kent, designed with a light touch by Jo Thompson and packed with interest from spring to autumn. We also drop in on a large garden in Surrey designed by Matthew Childs that prioritises year-round fun for the whole family. We admire the seclusion of a previously overlooked south London garden, now blissfully private thanks to the clever placing of deciduous trees. We also get inspiration from an atmospheric garden created among the tumbledown buildings of an old boat yard in Berlin, plus an artfully created moss garden on an island close to Helsinki. We celebrate gardeners’ plant passions, too – a garden and nursery near Dusseldorf inspired by Beth Chatto, a chrysanthemum enthusiast who grows these late-season beauties in her Cornish garden for the joy they bring her, and two houseplant experts who run a social enterprise that trains female prisoners to grow house plants for sale. Tony Kirkham champions the spindle – spectacular in autumn – and Poppy Okocha explains why she is passionate about growing food sustainably and organically.
