Gramophone

September 2026 This month’s cover artist is the Spanish violinist María Dueñas who talks about her new album for Deutsche Grammophon, ‘Homage to Heifetz’, recorded in collaboration with the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra and Gustavo Dudamel. Two new recordings of Monteverdi’s 1610 Vespers – from Robert Hollingworth and I Fagiolini on Coro, and Lambert Colson and InAlto on Ricercar – appear this month, and the conductors tell us about their engagement with the music. We also celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Husum Festival – ‘Rarities of Piano Music’ – in northern Germany, as well as travel to Berlin to go behind the scenes of the Decca Pure Analogue LP releases, witnessing the fascinating equipment and techniques involved in restoring famous old recordings to their analogue glory on high-quality vinyl. Elsewhere in the issue, in Icons we explore the life and legacy of the violinist and conductor Sir Neville Marriner, who founded the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. Classics Reconsidered looks back at the 1965 recording of Puccini’s Turandot, starring Birgit Nilsson and Franco Corelli. The September issue’s Collection explores the history on record of Mozart’s Symphony No 35, the ‘Haffner’, while Contemporary Composers introduces the work of the Norwegian composer Ørjan Matre and recommends some essential listening. Musician & the Score sees conductor Enrico Onofri talk us through his individual approach to Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. Plus, as always, the latest classical albums are reviewed by our expert critic, with the very best being named Editor’s Choices.
