JUST AS HARD ROCK had splintered into glam, at the dawn of the ’80s it fractured again into a new brand of metal that incorporated some of its glammiest pretensions, as practiced by emerging bands like Def Leppard and Mötley Crüe. At the same time, established acts like Kiss and Queen skittered away from their hard-rock roots to adopt, respectively, a more metal-pop and pop-rock sound.
