Band of Brothers, following the 101st Airborne Division’s Easy Company from D-Day to VE-Day, remains without doubt one of the most well-regarded Second World War drama series, and undoubtedly for many it was a gateway to learning more of the history. This year’s Masters of the Air, from the same creators, promises to tell the story of the 100th Bomb Group, part of the ‘Mighty Eighth’ air force that took to the skies over occupied Europe from 1942. This issue, RAF researcher Stuart Hadaway recounts how these American airmen joined Bomber Command’s perilous campaign to cripple Nazi Germany’s war industry, and how the ‘Bloody Hundredth’ earned its morbid nickname.
