Dr Tristram Clarke
Act of Separation and Deed of Demission, 23 May 1843 (NRS, RD15/32/347)
This year sees the 175th anniversary of one of the key moments of Scottish history, when in 1843 the church of Scotland was split down the middle and lost almost half its ministers and many of its members. The resulting formation of the Free church had a huge and lasting impact on Scottish life. This momentous event is recorded in the Act of Separation and Deed of Demission, a remarkable document that is preserved with other legal records in Register House.
