We added period style to our new extension
Keen to incorporate an authentic feel to her kitchen, Joanna Thornhill used a few canny design techniques to ensure the spaces flowed together effortlessly

Removing the plaster from the fireplace (which was previously boxed in) has turned it into a real focal point. An old 1950s kitchen cabinet inherited from Paul’s nan fits the alcove perfectly and stores all of Joanna’s craft supplies
GOOD IDEA Fixing the fitted shelving onto battens, rather than brackets, saves cash

My room...
A bit about me
I’m Joanna Thornhill and I live with my partner, Paul Hughes, and our dog, Stan Lee, in a twobed Victorian terrace in Walthamstow, London.
Before
My problem kitchen
Our old kitchen was tiny with no heating and was in a poor state of repair, with rotten woodwork and broken appliances, whilst our side return was essentially dead space. As it needed so much work anyway, it made sense to extend at the same time.
