The world of drumming was rocked as we were sending this magazine to press by the news that legendary educator, player and businessman Vic Firth had died. Vic was a resounding force for good in our close-knit industry and his passion for teaching and all facets of drumming was undiminished to the last. We interviewed Vic just a few weeks ago for our new bookazine Drummer presents… Improving with the Experts. He was the perfect fit for our brief – an expert in his field and devoted to the idea of constant improvement for drummers of all abilities, and his words carry even greater resonance now. The word great is bandied about liberally in these modern times, but our community has truly lost a great man.
Hannah Welton takes the cover this month and lets us in on what it’s like to work for the enigmatic superstar that is Prince, playing for 3rdEyeGirl, unexpected gigs across the globe and keeping 100 songs in mind for the Prince repertoire.
Elsewhere Steve Forman, famous LA studio percussionist who worked with the likes of the Beach Boys and David Bowie, waxes lyrical on his late-found love of the bodhran and Scottish folk music. Steve Forrest gives a frank interview about leaving Placebo, making it with his own bands and dealing with pre-gig nerves. Brian Tichy, drummer for Foreigner, Whitesnake and the man behind the annual Bonzo Bash in LA, chats to Joel McIver, and Bowling For Soup’s Gary Wiseman quashes rumours of his band’s retirement.
We’ve also got a report from Download Festival 2015, a Meinl Drum Festival round-up, more top studio advice from Mark Richardson in his guest tuition page and a set of Jobeky ‘Real Feel’ e-cymbals to give away worth over £500. That’s not even getting started on all the reviews, news, tuition and features we have packed within these pages… enjoy!
