ANDREW NEIL and Andrew Wilson went head to head on Spectator TV recently and the results were not pretty, if you’re a Nationalist. Whether people like Neil or not, he typifies the type of interviewer who independence figures will have to engage with on mainstream media to make the case for Scottish sovereignty: he asks the questions that ‘soft’ nationalists or those in two-minds will want answered before committing and staying committed.
The failure to answer them or provide responses that are unconvincing will lead people to think that the case for independence is weaker than it is. Sadly, Wilson fell short in this particular interview. Perhaps, with support for independence high in the polls, we will not need the ‘soft’ vote on either side. However, political wisdom suggests that it is exactly these groups that will give the Yes vote its majority in any referendum.
