Leave any country for a few days, and getting back you’ll always find a pile up of news stories that you’ve missed. If, like me you’ve just been away for a few days, you’ll know too that it was a return to several stories both uninspiring and unsurprising. Rich Westminster Tories continuing to sell the rest of us short in Brexit negotiations. Our wages continuing to fall behind price inflation. The ongoing austerity project continuing to leave the economies of the UK flagging and unequal. Uninspiring and unsurprising. Unsurprising, since all these stories were already ongoing. Uninspiring, since it’s clear Scotland could be doing so much better than this. With similar sized populations and geographical proximity, it’s little wonder that so many folk look to Scandinavia to see what Scotland could be like.
