Sitting between Florence and Siena, the Chianti region is broken down into six sub-regions or zones and the most famous of all is arguably Chianti Classico. Chianti Classico was awarded DOCG classification in 1996 – and the region boasts an incredibly diverse style of wine. As you may know, Sangiovese is the predominant variety used in all Chiantis – with at least 85 per cent coming from this local grape. The ‘other’ 15 per cent can be made up from a range of native grape varieties like Canaiolo, Colorino, Malvasia Nera, Ciliegiolo as well as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.
