If you live beside the seaside, your edible gardening is often hampered by strong, salt-laden winds and frequent deposits of sand. Most veg dislike being ready-salted, so they curl up and die.

Similar conditions are experienced to a lesser degree by anyone living next to a major road, with salt and grit being blasted a disturbingly long distance, causing both chemical and physical burns to tender foliage.
