Eclectic metalcore debutants keep their minds on the mosh
On Hollow Ground’s debut album sees the Leeds metalcore crew building on the promise displayed across three previously released EPs, plucking influences from all corners and switching between different sonic personas. Grime-inflected beats and quickfire rapping sees the band’s contemporary hip hop influences shining through on People Never Learn and Shut Down, while elsewhere pit-inducing breakdowns and glass-gargling vocals more synonymous with post-hardcore take centre stage. Bursts of progressive noodling emerge from …And Getting By, while the disquieting ambience of introspective cut Even Though, awash with bursts of melodramatic keys, makes for an emotional yet visceral climax. Each of the nine songs justifies its place, finding new variations on an enjoyable formula, and in Blood Is Blood On Hollow Ground have delivered a record ultimately written with the road - and heaving moshpits - in mind.
