Welcome to Model Engineer Issue 4538

We have workshop techniques old and new this time. Have you ever struggled, when boring castings, to get the hole nice and central? If the answer is, ‘err… yes’, then Ray Griffin has a solution. Have you considered delving into CNC but are not sure just where to start? Then Peter King might have a solution - and don’t be afraid of falling into the many traps because Peter has been there before you and can pull you out.

Three long running series draw to a conclusion this time. Doug Hewson finishes off his kit Britannia with some neat and tidy ‘true-to-scale’ pipework. Ron Wright finishes with a bang (!) as he covers ignition and the spark and Dennis Stones makes an elegant glass case for his skeleton clock.

Mariner progresses but Chris Walter asks, ‘are piston rings really necessary?’ You may be surprised …!

Terry Woodward visits a little vignette of times past in deepest Suffolk as he discovers ‘The Middy’, as it’s affectionately known down those parts.

The Saunderson & Mills tractor engine begins to take shape as the crucible is kept hot and there’s a little heat generated in Postbag (well, just a little…).
