It’s time once again to return to an age-old conflict. Not WWII – I’m talking about the traditional headto-head between Battlefieldand CallofDuty. How odd it feels, in 2021 – these two venerable giants, both wrestling not just with each other for multiplayer shooter success, but also with their own identities in a world where online gaming is more associated with battle royales, IP mash-ups, surprise successes, and endless live service than these kinds of big tentpole FPS releases. Swinging back and forth between the Three Sanctioned Settings (world war, modern, futuristic), each simultaneously seem to want to reinvent the series with each release, but without willingness to stray from the safety of past success.
