Modelling the US Navy Fighter and Attack Aircraft of World War II AVIATION IN SCALE ORANGE Series 2 Modelling the US Navy Fighter and Attack Aircraft of World War II The US Navy’s fleet faced the supreme test of war only thirty years after acquiring its first aircraft and just nineteen years after commissioning its first aircraft carrier. Naval aviation then carried the fight to the enemy and became the backbone of fleet striking power. After the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor, the handful of aircraft carriers in the Pacific filled the ensuing void and demonstrated the potency and flexibility of naval airpower. Although the physical position of the United States provided a strategic advantage of the ability to move ships between the Atlantic and Pacific fleets via the Panama Canal, it also placed the nation squarely between two fronts. Air operations in the Atlantic consisted of a blockade and campaign to protect convoys of ships that delivered raw materials, munitions, and reinforcements to the Allies. Although World War II contributed significantly to the development of aviation, the experience proved wrong some pre-war theories on the role of airpower to naval operations, and it became clear that neither an army of navy could achieve objectives in war without first achieving air superiority, and that neither could exert sufficient force without the aid of air power. Modelling US Navy aircraft from the Second World War has been and continues to be, one of the most popular subjects of the genre, and in this second book in the Aviation In Scale series, we take a look at some of the aircraft of that era, and how to build them in scale. 100 PAGES RRP: 17.99
